Affiliate content, duplicate content and the crucial differences between them; Um, there aren't any ..
According to the search engine newsgroup, alt.internet.search-motors, it appears that Google is getting better at detecting and downgrading affiliate content. It could very well be that since the same text content is repeated over and over on every affiliate site that runs it, Google downgrades it to simply be duplicate content. I see this as a problem, a growing problem, for every merchant and affiliate customer who uses a data source to feed pages. While the templates people use may vary in detail due to personalization by people to their liking, they are essentially all variations of the same theme and, of course, all contain the same few lines of text content in the same order.
Repeats like this shouldn't be too hard to identify and ignore or remove from listings or do whatever it may mean in the future that the idea of affiliate sites as we have them now simply isn't viable anymore. My crystal gift site is powered by a GoCollect.com feed that uses a Cusimano script. I have customized the templates, so if you know me, you will recognize the standard BB layout of the individual product pages. Visually, then, it's not like any of the other sites that use the same feed. However, it still has the same text content. Entering a sample into Google yields "about 584" results, which, or most of which we should be suspicious, since I won't go through them all to absolutely verify, they are based on the same feed. The problem here for both affiliate and affiliate merchants and Google is, what's the point of having them? If there's one site that has them, namely the original, what's the point of Google having the rest in the index? They all sell the same product for the same price, so why bother indexing them? Right now, it's the SEO battle. Why would anyone buy product A from my site instead of someone else's? The answer would be, because when they search for a product, they find my site before they find any of the others, and there are ways to promote sites that we all know here. But this really can't last. The world really needs only one website for these custom products and specialty items, and that's the one for the original manufacturers. Everything else essentially constitutes duplicate content and we know what happens to that, leaks.
Therefore, to counter this problem, you can replace the original with your own text and you can take your own photos of the product. This is not a problem for a small site, however many have tens of thousands of pages. How will someone rewrite that batch? Of course any lone affiliate can't get started, so the idea of affiliate sites as we have them now, I think, must inevitably give way to niche sites where the affiliate features a small range of elements in an individual style that will appeal. . to some of the purchasing public. The idea would be to create a presentation brand that customers are familiar with and feel comfortable with. If you look at the items on my crystal gift site, they are all photographed out of context. In your home, they are unlikely to be suspended in the air against a white background, which is how they are presented in the data source and therefore on my site. I suggest taking photos of the objects as they might appear in situ, creating a small mockup of an illuminated corner table and shooting it from a typical viewing angle, or having an object on a coffee table with a background of lights out, with a large sofa, gives an overall relaxed living feeling. This, compared to simply generating the existing feed data, would cost a lot, but it may be the only real way forward for niche affiliates. Do you know what that would entail? Quality sites. The kind that Google claims to like.
In the meantime, however, I suspect that the people who have built a multi-product affiliate site and have seen it do well and are now busy building more and more multi-product sites on the basis that everyone will be fine. in multiple disappointments. I am looking to create a general niche with my affiliate sites and have chosen crystal and glass gift items to work with as I can categorize them and maximize the potential of each category. So what I have, in effect, is a legion of niche sites, all interconnected.
By choice, now that I understand more of the industry than I did when I started with affiliate sites, I'd really like a site that offered watches and jewelry - these are the items people are happiest to buy on the web, the research suggests. but I don't know of a good feed other than Amazon and I have avoided getting too involved with Amazon as it has the high profile it has and will inevitably attract the largest number of affiliates and therefore risk being penalized. before any affiliate deletion. From what I have heard, this purge has already begun.
