Affiliate Marketing: How To Get Started In 6 Easy Steps
Affiliate marketing is probably the simplest business model you can choose to build a business. Of course, the devil is in the details, as they say, but the overall model can really be broken down into six stages.
Before we get to the steps, I want you to ask yourself a question. What do you hope to achieve with affiliate marketing? This is an easier question to answer than it looks. There are really only two basic options here.
The first is what I call the quick money pick. In other words, you want to make some money fast and are not interested in building a business. If that's the case for you, all you need to do is learn how to write exceptionally good ads and then use them to promote your affiliate product. Many people will say I'm wrong, but there's nothing wrong with doing it, as long as you're not honestly trying to build a long-term business this way. On the other hand, if you are looking to build a business with long term earning potential, you will have a longer road ahead of you. It will take longer to see any benefit from your efforts, but it will be worth it when you can take a day off, or even a week, and continue making sales in your absence.
These steps must be followed in order. If you try to exit the sequence, you will not get the desired results.
1. Choose A Market
Why choose a market and not a product? Because eventually you will want to add more products to your pipeline. You should pick a market that interests you and maybe something you already know something about. Don't forget that you are building for the long term.
2. Choose A Product
Once you've chosen your market, you only need to choose one product to get started. At first it will be very tempting to try adding all kinds of related products, but don't. Having just one product will help you focus on the important tasks. We recommend that you choose a product that converts well. This means that the product is being sold to a high percentage of visitors. This will help keep the cost per visitor low and increase profits.
3. Create A Follow-Up Series
Also called an autoresponder series, you should create one based on the topic and content of the product you are promoting. If you are promoting a physical product, you will need to create or localize content directly related to the product. For example, if you sell golf clubs, you can create a series about how to buy golf clubs that are right for you, or about the benefits of custom clubs, or even something about the club preferences of famous professional golfers. Be as creative as possible and stay on topic. It has been said that most sales are not made on the initial contact, but on the seventh. If you are not following your prospects, the bottom line is that you are losing sales.
4. Create An Email Capture Page
This is where you will gain insight into your prospects so that you can submit your follow-up series. If you are building a business, having your own website is a must, if only because you will check the content and be able to acquire the email addresses yourself. You may be able to go without it for a while, but it's not worth it.
5. Drive Traffic To Your Landing Page
Until you're done with step four, you don't even have to think about traffic techniques. If you don't have a place to send traffic, why worry about how to generate it in the first place? Depending on the traffic generation techniques you choose, it may take some time before you start seeing sales on your program. You should spend this time developing one or two traffic streams and perfecting these techniques to help you generate more traffic with less effort.
6. Find Other Related Products
Once your business is making money, it's time to start adding to your product list. I'm not saying you should go out and join every affiliate program that is even remotely related. What I mean is that you should carefully choose one or two additional products and add them to your pipeline. Since you have created a list of qualified prospects, you will be able to market these new products to them. This is the really long-term money maker for your business. As long as you keep recommending good products to your customer list, you can continue earning from them, even from those who have already purchased your latest recommended product.
So these six steps are all you need to go from nowhere to having a profitable business by selling other people's products. It can be easy to lose focus if you don't see immediate results, so keep your eyes on the ultimate goal of having a profitable business. You may also have a hard time finding the initial market and product. Take your time and choose the best possible product. If the product you choose to promote isn't good, your potential customers won't continue to listen to your advice.
