Your Site Registrations Can Help You Earn Big Bucks
I am a busy guy. I own several traditional brick-and-mortar businesses and spend a lot of time online. Since last month I have spent a lot of time working on this blog and reorienting myself on the net.
So every morning I take my four dogs out, have a cup of coffee, and toast a bagel, then go upstairs and turn on my computer. Some days I have to be away from home by 9:00. m. to get somewhere, and some days I have nothing but time. Either way, there are three things I do every morning after checking my emails. First I'm going to post an article on five different article sites. This ensures that there is a constant stream of new one-way links to this website.
Then I go to my RSS reader and peek a bit at the forums and blogs to see what's going on. I keep a notebook next to my computer and write down anything I think I can use later. Then I come to the most interesting and important part of the morning, I go to my AWStats page.
Awstats is a basic site log analysis program that comes with most hosting accounts. I've always wondered how accurate view counts and other numbers are, but it doesn't matter because I'm not looking for counts, I'm looking for trends.
Reviewing and understanding your site's traffic logs can help you earn more by customizing your site to meet the needs of your visitors.
The first place I stop is the average number of pages per day of the week. I noticed on Affiliate Blog that traffic starts strong on Monday, resumes through Wednesday, and then starts to slow down. There is a small peak on Saturday morning, but otherwise, it's a classic bell curve. What does this mean? It means that if I have something that I think will be well received, I try to post it on Sunday and ping it by Monday. I also noticed that my RSS feed subscription follows the same pattern. This all makes sense because people start the week strong and end it tired, myself included.
I go through the countries and look at the flags because I think it's cool. Next, I stop at the section that shows the robots visiting the site. I make sure everyone has been there recently (especially Google) and take note if anything looks out of place. I recently realized that one of the minor bots had never visited it, so I went to the site and submitted a list. If you're curious about all the robots out there, go to Robotstxt.com and check them out. Make sure the best bots on the list have visited your site in the past month. If not, you have to take them there. I noticed that MSN, Yahoo, and Google (in that order) are the ones that visit my site the most. You need regular bot visits to make sure your most recent content is indexed and available to potential visitors. Now we come to the fun part, the list of the most viewed pages. This tells you which content people are most interested in and which ones aren't really up to par. The most popular post on Affiliate Blog was The 10 Best Payout Programs on Commission Junction This Week. Oddly, a similar post on Shareasale is much further down the list, meaning people want to know about the highest paid programs, but they also want to know about Commission Junction. I always look for posts that quickly move up the line, and I always make a note of them to think of another post that my visitors might like. I get some search engine traffic, but not a lot, so I look at the keywords. Judging by some of the keywords that appear there, this section isn't very accurate.
Still here? Okay, listen. This is where you can really multiply your traffic, find a few compatriots to work with and gain insight into the minds of your visitors. Scroll down to the section that shows the external websites that people are coming from. Understand that this is where your visitors saw something about you and clicked on it.
Check out this entire list. I look for blog sites, websites, social bookmarking sites (like del.icio.us), and forums that have never surfaced before or have moved quickly. I click on the link and see where it leads. So I see the context in which my website appears.
Just like I do with people who crawl my blog (they reference it on their blog), I follow each link, get an email address, and send a quick email to the person thanking them for taking the time to mention ty site. Nothing special, just a quick thank you is fine.
The responses I get are fantastic. I would say that the vast majority of them (probably 80%) are ied with amazement that I take the time to acknowledge their actions. But why shouldn't it? If someone takes the time to advise you, the least you can do is acknowledge that recommendation and be grateful for it.
I love the list of sites because I discover some really cool things. For example, my Google blog trackback when they bought Writely was actually listed on the Google blog page and brought me some traffic. And I've been on the front page of del.icio.us for quite some time long enough to even get a few hits like that. It is very interesting and it is a lot of fun to walk around. Sigh, I'm an idiot.
One final observation: I noticed that people who bookmark my page fluctuate between 7 and 10%, which is not bad. My RSS feed list on Feedburner runs roughly the same range throughout the month, which means more people bookmark the site than when they subscribe to RSS feeds. I've been thinking about it all month and have decided that the vast majority of my visitors don't use RSS regularly's why the new crimson box appeared at the top of my blog pages today. I have prepared an email version of my RSS feed in the form of a digest which I will make available weekly.
So there is a lot of information in that log file, you just have to go through it carefully and think.
