Diagnostic Ultrasound In Pregnancy: Is It Necessary?
The journal, Obstetrics, and Gynecology estimated that more than half of all pregnant women in 1990 had had a diagnostic ultrasound, however, research published in the New England Journal of Medicine suggests that 80% of all women in pregnancy are at very low risk and does not require ultrasound scans. Unnecessary ultrasound costs about $ 1 billion per year.
Any woman who is told she needs an ultrasound should ask about the potential benefits of the test and the risks of the procedure. You should ask if and how the ultrasound results will affect the care you would otherwise receive. If the result of the ultrasound does not affect your care, you may question the need for the test. Only after you are fully informed about the need for the test, the benefits, and the risks, should you sign a consent for the procedure.
USES OF ULTRASOUND
According to the ACOG patient education leaflet, "Ultrasound is not necessary for all women or in all pregnancies." However, it is most often used as a standard procedure for all pregnant women. Some common uses include the diagnosis and detection of uterine or ectopic pregnancies, observation of pelvic inflammatory diseases, cysts, tumors, uterine cancer, endometriosis, and congenital anomalies.
Ultrasounds can compare the age and weight of the fetus, observe the position of the placenta, the amount of amniotic fluid present, and diagnose certain birth defects, such as neural tube defects. Ultrasound is used during amniocentesis to check the position of the baby and make sure the needle is positioned correctly. Some doctors use ultrasound to estimate fetal weight. This is not a very accurate measurement unless numerous criteria and scans are checked. Head circumference is a measure. However, in cases of gestational diabetes, it is inaccurate because these babies only gain weight on their bodies. Ultrasounds are often used to date pregnancies. According to Otto and Platt, 1991, in the first quarter, the error interval is 5 days, in the second quarter it increases to 8 days and if it is made in the last quarter it is 22 days.
